During the farmers’ grievance redress meeting here on Friday, Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon assured them that compensation would be provided for those whose crops have been affected due to unseasonal rainfall.
Farmers from Palkarai region in the district complained that paddy seeds that were bought from the agricultural offices gave poor yield. “Also, some of the seeds did not even grow. Due to that, many farmers suffered loss this season,” they added.
Officials addressing the grievances said they would study the issue and take action accordingly.
Kannappan, a farmer from Mangudi, complained that despite several complaints and representations to the officials, desilting works in Paralaiyar waterbody was not carried out.
Public Works Department officials said they have sought funds from the government to take up the issue this year. When funds were allocated, desilting works would be completed, officials added.
Muthuramu, district president of Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, raised issue of unseasonal rain which had affected several farmers this year.
“Several farmers in regions like Thiruvadanai, R.S. Mangalam and Kadaladi who have largely grown paddy on their farmlands are suffering huge loss due to heavy rains that lashed out unseasonally this year,” he added.
Condemning that the insurance agencies were not considering the whole damage that farmers have suffered, he said, government should instruct private insurance companies to survey the entire damaged area and provide the insurance amount accordingly.
As the survey was under way, officials said, the final data after the process would be submitted with the companies and appropriate amount would be settled.
Also, requests were made to instruct insurance companies to not conduct random surveys, instead, they should be asked to provide 33% fixed compensation for all farmers who suffered damage.
Mr. Simranjeet Singh Kahlon provided awareness handbooks to farmers for preventing pests from attacking the crops.
As grievances raised by the farmers were related to several departments, he directed officials to deliver coordinated work to resolve the issues of farmers.
