A 70-year-old farmer from Vadipatti taluk in Madurai district has petitioned Collector M.S. Sangeetha on Monday to deny permission to operate a stone quarry near his agriculture land.
V. Paniyandi, a farmer from Katchaikatti, in his petition, said that his agriculture land sprawling in an area of two acres was located at a place called ‘Mettan kadu,’ near ‘Vaguthu malai.’
For more than 30 years, he has been growing coconut trees, mango trees, raising livestock like cattle and goats on the land.
In 2015, to operate a stone quarry within 100 metres from the north side of his land, permissions were procured from the district administration by producing fake documents, he alleged.
“I fought against the stone quarry in the court and got an order to shut the quarry which was operating against the rules,” he added.
But, again, the process for setting up a new stone quarry on the western side of his land was under way, he said.
“Since it is clear that the operation would be against the rules, the district administration should not grant them permission,” he appealed.
