Claiming that permission was denied for conducting a public meeting at Municipal Chatiram in the Erode (East) Assembly constituency, the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) cadre briefly staged a road roko here on Friday evening.
The cadre said they sought permission from the Election Commission on January 25 for a public meeting at 7 p.m. at Thirunagar Colony on Friday. The officials had orally granted permission, prompting them to start erecting the stage at 4 p.m. on Friday at Thirunagar Colony.
However, at the last minute, the police denied permission and instead granted approval for the meeting at Municipal Chatiram. At 6 p.m., when the cadre began work at Municipal Chatiram, the police denied permission, they claimed. Condemning the police action, they accused the authorities of acting in favour of the ruling government. The police eventually pacified them and allowed them to erect the stage, after which the work resumed.
