The AITUC Tamil Nadu Manual Workers’ Federation has stressed the need to cover the migrant workers employed in various industries/trade/businesses in Tamil Nadu under the social security schemes implemented by the State government.
In a resolution passed at the Federation’s State Committee meeting held in Thanjavur on January 31, the federation pointed out that several lakhs of migrant workers were employed in various trade/business/industries in Tamil Nadu.
Such workers were not covered under the welfare and social security schemes implemented for workers in the State. In order to ensure that at least bare minimum social security cover benefits reach the migrant workers, they should be enrolled in the welfare boards functioning for the benefit of those employed in unorganised sectors, the federation said.
In another resolution, denial of pension to senior citizen women members of the unorganised sector workers welfare boards for the reason that these women benefit from the “₹1,000 monthly assistance scheme for women in Tamil Nadu” was opposed by the federation.
Demanding the release of pension amount, compounded from the date of denial of the pension, to the senior citizen women members of the workers welfare boards and distribution of pension amount on or before the fifth day of every month, the federation urged the State government to enhance the pension amount to ₹3,000 a month in view of the inflation.
It sought enhancement of financial assistance extended for the marriage of women and extension of financial aid for the education and solatium for the natural death of the manual workers as in done by the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board.
