DMK, BJP spar at Chennai Corporation council meeting

There was a commotion at the Council meeting on Thursday (January 30, 2025), amidst Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in the context of Martyrs Day.

At 11 a.m., Mayor R.Priya requested all in the Council Hall of Ripon Buildings to maintain two minutes of silence to pay homage to the freedom fighters.

Later, at zero hour, Ward 29 Councillor Karthikeyan Thirunavukarasu of DMK implied that the name of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse should not be taken in the Council. Before he could complete his speech, BJP Councillor for Ward 134 Uma Anandan stated her objection.

After that, she said the word ‘ineptitude’ to which many DMK councillors such as Ward 12 Councillor V. Kaviganesan and Ward 138 Councillor K. Kannan objected and started shouting at her to sit down.

The Mayor ordered silence and said Ms. Anandan must refrain from using such words in the meeting. Mayor said that the BJP councillor had apologised and the matter should not be dragged further.
