Collector R. Sukumar on Monday inaugurated the distribution of deworming tablets to students at Kallanai Corporation Higher Secondary School in Tirunelveli Town in the presence of MLA Nainar Nagenthiran.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said the deworming tablets, ‘Albendazole’, being distributed to the students as part of National Deworming Day, would be given to 4,11,683 children between the age of 1 and 19, 1,29,309 women through schools, colleges, primary health centres and anganwadis by trained teachers, nurses, health inspectors and medical officers.
The school dropouts and the pregnant women between the age of 20 and 30 would be covered by the anganwadis and the health sub-centres. Children who were left out would be given the tablets on February 17.
“The deworming tablets will prevent anaemia caused by the worms and boost immunity, intelligence and growth. Hence, parents should encourage their children to take albendazole tablets,” said Dr. Sukumar.
Mayor G. Ramakrishnan, Deputy Mayor K.R. Raju, Joint Director of Public Health Latha and Deputy Director Geetha Rani were present.
