The Coimbatore Corporation is planning to set up a parking facility in Race Course to address increasing crowds and potential traffic congestion.
After being transformed into a model road under the Central Government’s Smart Cities Mission, the 3-km-long Race Course Circular Road, which includes a modern walking track, has become a popular destination and increasingly congested, especially on weekends.
A senior corporation official said that the proposed facility will be developed on a 45-cent vacant land between KG Circle and CSI Church Circle. Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran recently inspected the site and instructed officials to convert it into a parking area with removable container-based eateries to generate revenue.
“We have begun preparing an estimate of around ₹6.5 crore. Once the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is finalised, we will seek necessary approvals and proceed with the work,” the official said.
Once completed, the facility is expected to accommodate around 200 two-wheelers, helping to ease the demand for parking in the area.
