The villagers consistently are submitting petitions to remove the Prosopis juliflora as it is obstructing the waterway of Kallar river altering into course, leading to severe flooding during the monsoon season.

N. Vettaiperumal from Therkukalmedu said that the growth of the Prosopis juliflora in the river’s waterway had been increasing over the past few years.

“It has encroached upon the waterway of the river and reduced the width of the river’” he added.

He noted that the village had been consistently affected by the flooding in recent years and removal of these plants from the waterway could reduce the risk of flooding in the village.
