CIAL initiates internal inquiry into toddler’s death

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has initiated an internal inquiry into the tragic death of a three-year-old boy from Rajasthan after he reportedly fell into a waste pit near a cafe on the domestic terminal premises on Friday (February 7).

The child and his family were said to have concluded a tour of Kerala and were set to return to their home State when the incident occurred. The boy is said to have moved into a bushy area near a kiosk, reportedly unnoticed by his family members. He died although his location was traced with the help of CCTVs. He was taken out of the pit full of dirty water and taken to a private hospital in Angamaly. The Nedumbassery police have registered a case for unnatural death and are probing the incident.

The airport authorities said the pit was kept open because of ongoing construction work. In a communication issued on Friday, they said that this backyard area is not usually accessed by anybody. A review of the CCTV footage by security personnel confirmed that the child had crossed the shrub barrier and accidentally fallen into the pit.

CIAL is actively coordinating with the family and relevant authorities to provide all necessary support during this difficult time, they added.
