BJP MLA proposes new name for Mustafabad, cites more Hindus in constituency

A day after winning Mustafabad seat, Mohan Singh Bisht, BJP MLA-elect from the north-east Delhi constituency which was hit by riots in 2020, proposed a name change for his constituency as ‘Shiv Vihar’ or ‘Shiv Puri’.

Citing higher Hindu population in the constituency, Mr Bisht said, “On one side, there are 58% people and, on the other, 42%. It is the right of 58% that the name should be changed accordingly. The name could be Shiv Vihar or Shiv Puri.”

Responding to Mr. Bisht’s name-change proposal, AAP’s Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan questioned what the BJP wanted to achieve by it. Mr. Khan retained the Okhla seat during the Delhi Assembly poll.

The 67-year-old secured victory over AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan in Mustafabad by 17,578 votes. Mr. Bisht won from Karawal Nagar constituency in 2020 was offered Mustafabad for the 2025 Delhi Assembly poll. Kapil Mishra replaced Mr. Bisht from Karawal Nagar, which BJP won.
