Tirunelveli City police, which introduced five bike patrol teams with armed police personnel last month, have intensified patrolling by inducting four more teams.
In the first phase, Commissioner of Police Santosh Hadimani had flagged off last month five bike patrol teams – 2 for Palayamkottai, 1 each for Tirunelveli Town, Tirunelveli Junction and Melapalayam areas. The policemen in the patrol team would be carrying pistol to take on criminals during adverse situations.
Since the bike patrolling gave much advantage for the armed police on patrol in following the anti-social elements even through narrow streets, it was decided to increase the fleet strength by 9. To further strengthen the patrolling armed police personnel, four more bike patrol teams were flagged off by the Commissioner of Police on Sunday to take the total number of patrol teams to 9.
While two bike patrol teams are now on the move in areas under the Palayamkottai police station, the remaining seven patrol teams are taking care of other police stations – High Ground, Perumalpuram, Melapalayam, Tirunelveli Junction, Tirunelveli Town, Pettai and Thatchanallur police stations.
