The Tamilnadu Health Development Association has urged the Health department to ensure that patients who do not have Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) cards are treated in government hospitals. Patients from other States should also be treated free of cost.
In a letter to the Health Secretary, C.S. Rex Sargunam, president and N. Gnanaguru, secretary of the association, said that healthcare was a basic right of the people. It was the State’s responsibility to provide good healthcare for all persons, particularly those who seek healthcare in government hospitals. While persons from other States are being charged for treatment, those in the State were asked to get CMCHIS cards.
The association urged the State government to ensure that heads of all government hospitals displayed information stating that all patients including those without CMCHIS cards would be treated and no one would be turned away for want of cards.
Dr. Rex Sargunam said that under Universal Health Coverage, persons should be treated free irrespective of the States they were from.
