Tamil Nadu All Government College UGC Qualified Guest Lecturers Association has appealed to the Department of Higher Education to transfer guest lecturers (GLs), who have been replaced by permanent staff, to fill vacancies in other institutions, instead of leaving them in limbo.
A total of 7,360 guest lecturers are working in 164 government arts and science colleges across Tamil Nadu. The affected guest lecturers had spent between five and eight years in service and earn a monthly salary of ₹25,000.
“At present, at least 10 guest lecturers have been removed from their job since December 2024 without notice, because permanent staff had been appointed to their post. However, they are not being considered for re-employment. There are enough vacancies in other government colleges that could be filled in by these guest lecturers till new recruitments were made,” association president V. Thangaraj told The Hindu.
Faculty, who had been replaced, said they had been left without any instructions about their future employment. “As it is, we are able to earn only 11 months’ salary, without any service benefits. I have presented my particulars and petition requesting alternative posting in any other government college to the Higher Education Department, but have not received any response. The abrupt dismissal is unfair,” said a physical education guest lecturer.
