Armed Reserve Police Constable R. Dhanushkodi, who was arrested for illegal possession of a pistol along with five rounds of bullets at Poosaripatti near Vachchakarapatti on Sunday, has been booked under the provisions of the Arms Act.
Another unnamed person, aged between 25 and 30, who managed to flee the area before the police could reach the spot, has also been booked.
According to police sources, R. Ramesh Kumar, 35, of Poosaripatti, along with other villagers, noticed the suspicious movement of two persons on a motorbike. As they were roaming around the area, the villagers intercepted and questioned them as they were strangers to the locality. One of them started to make contradictory statements and also sounded arrogant.
The bike rider identified himself as Dhanushkodi of Koomapatti. Even as he was speaking in a threatening tone, the villagers found a bag in the petrol pouch of the bike. When they found a pistol along with bullets, they caught hold of Dhanushkodi, but the other person fled the scene and disappeared into the wild bushes. They then alerted the Vachchakarapatti police, who took them for enquiry.
The police said that interrogation of the policeman as to how he got possession of the pistol was under way. Besides, they were on the lookout for the other accused and also probing why they were in Poosaripatti.
