In a bid to enhance the quality of service provided to children and mothers, the authorities in Tiruchi have taken steps to strengthen the infrastructure and improve the functioning of anganwadis in the city.
According to sources, about 40,990 children are enrolled in the 295 anganwadi centres in Tiruchi.
Maintenance and repair work were undertaken at around 38 centres and new buildings constructed at eight centres at an estimate of ₹2.02 crore from the Tiruchi Corporation’s General Funds. The councillors have been instructed to review the infrastructure needs at the anganwadi centres in their respective wards to undertake development work.
The civic body is keen on improving the infrastructure of anganwadis that do not have proper buildings, toilets, drinking water facilities, and other amenities, the officials said.
Meanwhile, the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) has focused its attention on improving the functioning of anganwadi centres with a thrust on the effective implementation of supplementary nutrition activities.
The officials have stepped up field inspections to ensure a proper supply of nutrition kits, supplements, and protein-rich and iron-rich foods. The field officials have been asked to conduct regular inspections of the centres to ensure the provision of quality food to children and pregnant and lactating women in all anganwadi centres across the district. The functioning of the centres is being reviewed.
Steps are being taken to raise awareness about the ICDS schemes among the residents and increase enrolment in anganwadis to ensure the health of expectant mothers and children. “Teaching activities at the centres will be enhanced to prompt parents to send their children with eagerness to the anganwadis,” said an official.
