Akkaraipettai residents oppose merger with Nagapattinam municipality

A cross-section of residents and local fishermen from 64 villages, including Keechankuppam, and leaders of Akkaraipettai, a village panchayat, is against its proposed merger with the Nagapattinam Municipality. The residents submitted petitions to the District Collector urging him to retain Akkaraipettai as a panchayat. They fear the proposed merger would impact rural welfare schemes and diminish local governance autonomy.

They expressed concern over potential heavier tax burden and changes in administrative policies that could affect essential services and infrastructure development in their village.
