Residents of Adi Dravidar Colony in Morepatti (West) at Vedasandur taluk in Dindigul district on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here demanding the construction of an overhead tank in their colony.

The residents, in their petition to Collector S. Saravanan, said there was an overhead tank in the area with a capacity of 60,000 litres that catered to the day-to-day needs of about 400 families. Since the overhead tank was in a dilapidated condition it was demolished by the authorities. They gave assurance to the residents that a new one would be constructed in its place, they said.

However, even after six months, there was no progress made and no steps taken by the authorities to construct a new overhead tank. Steps were not taken to even provide an alternative source of water supply, the residents complained.

P. Murugan, one of the residents who participated in the demonstration, said the authorities had not taken steps so far to construct a new overhead tank in its place. They were dependent on two 1,000 litre tanks in the neighbouring wards for the water, which was more than a km away. They either had to walk or use their vehicle to get water from these tanks, he said.

Another resident of the area, E. Nagaraj, said that sometimes they could not rely on these water tanks as they were in neighbouring wards and sometimes the tanks also went dry. The residents of these wards had often told them that they could collect water only after the residents of these wards had collected it first.

The residents said the Collector had instructed the Block Development Officer to look into the issue and take steps to redress the grievance of the residents at the earliest. The residents hoped that the authorities would commence the work on the new overhead tank in the coming days.
