Nagapattinam roads in dire condition; residents urge immediate repairs

The Nagapattinam District Development Committee has urged the State government to take steps to repair and rebuild major roads in the district, citing their bad condition and the severe inconvenience faced by commuters.

In a petition submitted to the Chief Minister, the Ministers for Highways and Municipal Administration, the District Collector, and officials concerned, N.P. Bhaskaran, president of the Nagapattinam District Development Committee, highlighted the poor state of key roads in the town, including stretches from Melakottai Vasal to the old bus stand, Nellukadai, Mariamman Temple, Neela South Street, Neela East Street, Neela North Street, Hospital Road, Public Office Road, Marundukothalam Road, and the Nagore route.

“These roads are filled with potholes, deep trenches, and uneven surfaces, making it extremely difficult for two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and heavy vehicles to pass through. Government bus drivers are struggling to operate their vehicles, and the public is suffering every day because of lack of proper infrastructure,” said Mr. Bhaskaran.

He pointed out that these roads serve as crucial transport links for the town, with no alternative routes available. The frequent accidents, vehicle damages, and daily hardships caused by the poor road conditions had left both motorists and pedestrians frustrated.

“We request the government to take action and relay these roads using high-quality material to ensure safe and smooth travel for all road users. The people of Nagapattinam cannot continue to suffer because of administrative delays,” Mr. Bhaskaran added.
