Motorists who are booked by the police for driving under the influence of alcohol in Coimbatore city can now pay the fine through a mobile court. The mobile court was introduced in a move to address the pendency of cases registered for drunk driving.
According to the police, majority of the cases registered for driving under the influence of alcohol had been pending and City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar wanted to address the pendency. The offence attracts a fine of ₹10,000 when booked for first time.
The police said the facility started functioning on February 1. A total of 132 cases were registered in Coimbatore city for driving under the influence of alcohol from February 1 to 6. The police said that 46 out of the 132 cases and 726 previous cases were settled through the mobile court from February 1 to 6. Offenders paid ₹77,20,000 as fine for a total of 772 cases.
A senior police officer said offenders would be informed about the location of the mobile court to pay the fine.
Driving under the influence of alcohol attracts a fine upto ₹10,000 and/or upto six months imprisonment as per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 for the first offence. The fine goes upto ₹15,000 and/or with an imprisonment upto two years when a person commits the offence for a second time.
