A team of doctors at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) performed an eight-hour-long surgery on a 29-year-old man who accidentally injured his left wrist in a wood-cutting machine at his workplace on Wednesday morning.
According to a press release, he was initially taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital and later referred to the RGGGH. On examination, the doctors found a laceration the size of 8x8x3 cm on the left wrist — extending from the radial to ulnar side (same side of the little finger) — and exposing the underlying cut tendons and muscles. There was no movement in the left wrist and fingers, coupled with loss of sensation in the left hand.
An X-ray showed distal radius fracture. At the RGGGH, he was immediately taken to the emergency operation theatre. A team of orthopedicians fixed the fracture, after which a team of plastic surgeons repaired the blood vessels, tendons, and nerves, restoring the functioning of the fingers. Capillary refill was found to be normal; pin prick bleeding was present in all the fingers. The patient is under supervision.
