Recovery of steel bombs: police continue flash inspections at Chekkiad

The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad on Friday (February 7) continued extensive flash inspections in various parts of Chekkiad, a village under the jurisdiction of Valayam police station in Kozhikode district, following the alleged recovery of 14 steel bombs containing highly explosive fillers from an abandoned plot on Thursday (February 6).

District Police Chief (Kozhikode rural) K.E. Baiju issued instructions to the station house officers of various local police stations in the politically sensitive areas to step up surveillance with the support of specialised squads. He also asked the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nadapuram, to oversee the ongoing investigation into the latest incident.

The police officers from Valayam station said that the newly recovered crude bombs were freshly made ones, which were defused on Friday. They said the bomb squads and the dog squads were conducting intensified inspections at all politically sensitive village areas to check the possibility of similar hidden explosive stock.

It was around 5 p.m. on Thursday (February 6), that the Valayam police received a tip-off about the alleged secret storage of 14 steel bombs and two pipe bombs under a culvert at Parachal in Chekkiad. A few iron swords were also reportedly found at the spot. The police sources said they were yet to gather any clues about the elements allegedly behind the incident.
