The State has been allotted a sum of ₹6,626 crore in the Budget this year for executing various railway infrastructure works, said Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at a press conference held in New Delhi on Monday.
The Union Minister announced the Budget details through a virtual press conference held along with the railway officials of Southern Railway.
Mr. Vaishnaw said the Budget amount was 7.5 times more compared to the allotment of ₹879 crore made during the United Progressive Alliance government of 2009-14.
A total of 22 track work projects were being executed for a length of 2,587 kilometres at a cost of ₹33,467 crore, even as 1,303 km of new tracks have been added in the State since 2014.
On the safety front, the Southern Railway was installing Kavach for more than 600 km out of total sanctioned length of 1,460 km.
Mr. Vaishnaw said that the Pamban bridge, which was built at a cost of ₹535 crore, would be inaugurated shortly after getting the dates from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Regarding the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme of redeveloping railway stations, the Railway Minister said a total of 77 stations were being redeveloped at a cost of ₹2,498 crore.
Some of the mportant railway stations include Egmore, Rameshwaram, Madurai, Katpadi and Kanyakumari are under redevelopment.
