Pruning of rose plants begins at Government Rose Garden in Udhagamandalam

Pruning of rose plants at the Government Rose Garden in Udhagamandalam began on Monday as part of preparations for the annual rose show.

The Nilgiris District Collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Thanneeru, inaugurated the pruning work.

In a press release, the district administration stated that the garden, a popular tourist destination, attracts an average of 9 to 10 lakh visitors annually.

The garden houses 32,000 rose plants across 4,201 varieties of rose plants from all across the world have been collected and maintained in the garden, with new varieties introduced in 2024 to enhance biodiversity. A rose exhibition is organised every May to coincide with the summer tourist season.

In preparation for the 20th Rose show this year, over 2.5 lakh flower seedlings have been planted for display, the release said.

The Joint Director of Horticulture and other officials were present.
