District Collector R. Brindha Devi said that 70 government schools in Salem district have been functioning for more than 100 years.

Participating in the sesquicentennial celebrations of the Fort Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Salem city on Saturday, Ms. Brindha Devi released a special edition book of the school.

Ms. Brindha Devi said that 70 schools in the district have completed more than 100 years. The people who studied in these schools and achieved great heights in various sectors were honoured. This was done to motivate the present students to achieve like their seniors. Of these 70 schools, Salem Fort Girls School has a special place. It was started as a primary school in 1874 and later upgraded as high school and then higher secondary school.

The teachers were playing a vital role in the achievements of students. The confidence level among the government school students was always high. Though government school students look simple, they were able to work as a team and possessed great administrative skills, Ms. Brindha Devi added.

Stating that former students of this school have become doctors, engineers, people representatives, teachers, and higher government officials, the Collector said that all this happened because of the teachers. In the special edition book released about the school, the history, development, and achievements were mentioned clearly, the Collector added.

Chief Education Officer M. Kabeer, Deputy Mayor M. Saradha Devi, former students of the school and School Education Department officials participated.
