50 injured as bus overturns in Kozhikode

At least 50 passengers, including schoolchildren, were injured when a speeding private bus overturned at Arayidathupalam in the city on Tuesday evening.

Forty-one of the injured passengers were admitted to Baby Memorial Hospital, while nine others were taken to Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital. The condition of one person is reported to be critical.

The bus, which departed from the mofussil bus station at around 4:15 p.m., was on its way to the medical college-Mavoor-Koolimadu route when the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a two-wheeler after exiting the E.K. Nayanar flyover at Arayidathupalam. It crashed into a divider and overturned. The two-wheeler rider was also seriously injured in the accident.

Some eyewitnesses said that the bus was travelling at high speed. The impact of the crash was severe, causing the bus to overturn and trapping several passengers inside.

The police, fire force personnel, and local people rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations, taking out the trapped passengers and providing first aid. The injured were then transported to nearby hospitals.

Traffic was gradually restored after removing the bus using a crane from the accident site. The police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
