24 young musicians to take part in two-day ‘Yuv Mahotav’ in Mangaluru from February 8

As many as 24 young Hindustani vocalists and instrumentalists from across India will take part in the two-day national level ‘Yuv Mahotsav’ musical event at the Don Bosco Hall in Mangaluru from February 8.

The event will be organised by Sangeet Bharati Foundation. Apart from final music competition for 12 young vocalists and 12 young instrumentalists, there will be a masterclass by Ustad Rafique Khan, Shashank Makedar, and Vidushi Purnima Bhat Kulkarni.

The programme will end with Bansuri-vocal-sitar recital by the trio Pandit Ronu Mujumdar, Pandit Jayateerth Mevundi, and Ustad Rafiq Khan. Pandit Yashwant Vaishnav will accompany the artists on tabla, while Narendra L. Nayak will be on the harmonium.

Talking to reporters in Mangaluru on Tuesday, foundation secretary Ushaprabha N. Nayak said a panel of four musicians went through the 15-minute video of each of the 110 participants of the national music competition organised by the foundation. They selected 12 each vocalists and instrumentalists, who will take part in the final round of the competition that will be held on February 8 in Mangaluru from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Each of 24 young musicians will play for 15 minutes. Judges Pandit Ronu Mujumdar, Ustad Rafique Khan, Pandit Jayateerth Mevundi, tabla player Yashwant Vaishnav, Vidushi Poornima Bhat Kulkarni, and Shashank Maktedar will select the top three vocalists and instrumentalists.

The top three vocalists and instrumentalists will perform on February 9 evening and each of them will receive a cash award of ₹60,000. Each of the toppers will perform for 30 minutes. This will be followed by Bansuri-vocal-sitar recital by Pandit Ronu Mujumdar, Pandit Jayateerth Mevundi, and Ustad Rafiq Khan.

Masterclass workshop for music lovers and music students will be held on February 9 between 8.30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Ustad Rafiq Khan and Pandit Ronu Mujumdar will conduct the instrumental classes, while vocal classes will be conducted by Shashank Makedar and Vidushi Purnima Bhat Kulkarni. Music lovers who want to take part in the workshop have to register their names by paying ₹500, Ms. Nayak said.
