A team of police from Karimedu police station seized 150 kg of ganja and arrested four persons from Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchi on Monday.
The accused were identified as S. Premkumar, 38, of Coimbatore, N. Alex Pandi, 40, of Mudakkusalai, K. Vijayakumar, 45, of Simmakkal and P. Deepak, 31 of Tiruchi.
Based on a specific intelligence input that ganja was being smuggled into the city for distribution across the city, a team of police, led by Inspector of Police, M. Mohammed Idris, conducted a vehicle check at Arapalayam roundabout.
The police intercepted a van for checking when four persons who jumped out of the vehicle tried to flee.
However, the police managed to chase them and eventually nabbed them.
Upon checking, the police found that 150 kg was being brought from Andhra Pradesh by the accused. The accused had tried to divert the attention of the police with stickers as if the van belonged to a courier service.
The police seized the van along with the contraband and also six mobile phones.
