Ten candidates filed nominations for the Member of Legislative Council (MLC) elections in the Uttarandhra Teachers’ Constituency by Monday, February 10.
The scrutiny of nominations will be done on February 11 and the last day for withdrawal of nominations is February 13.
The election will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 27 at 123 polling stations for teachers representing the north coastal Andhra districts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Anakapalli, Alluri Sitaram Raju and Parvathipuram-Manyam.
Returning Officer and Visakhapatnam Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad received the nomination documents.
The election notification was issued on February 3. No nominations were filed on the first day, and three contestants filed nominations on the second day. Pakalapati Raghu Varma, the sitting MLC (teachers’ constituency), filed two sets of nominations on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh Teachers Federation. Mr. Raghu Varma was accompanied by Vepada Chiranjeevi Rao, the sitting MLC (Graduate constituency).
On the last day (Monday), Pedapanki Siva Prasad and Sunkara Srinivasa Rao filed the nominations.
The sitting MLC, Mr. Raghuvarma, is a native of Bhogapuram village of Vizianagaram district. In the 2019 MLC polls for the Teachers’ Constituency, he won the seat by securing 8,372 ‘quota’ votes in the process of elimination with the addition of the second preference votes. His nearest rival, Gade Srinivasulu Naidu, got 6,044 votes in the process of elimination.
The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will continue until polling day. According to the final voter list of the Teacher MLC constituency released on December 30, 2024, there are 21,555 registered voters in the six districts, comprising 12,948 male voters and 8,607 female voters.
The Returning Officer said all voters can cast their votes, and the MCC will remain in force within the region.
