Over the past four years, 57,241 women’s self-help groups (SHGs) in Coimbatore district have received ₹3,505.87 crore in bank loans under the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihood Mission (Mahalir thittam).
According to the district administration, the scheme aims to improve the living standards of women below the poverty line in rural and urban areas by forming SHGs offering skill development training, providing individual and group loans, supporting new SHGs, offering loans to persons with disabilities, and promoting self-employment.
In Coimbatore, 16,338 women’s SHGs operate across various areas: 5,356 in Coimbatore City, 1,248 in municipalities, 2,034 in town panchayats, and 7,700 in panchayat unions.
In Coimbatore district, over the past year, loan assistance has been provided to various SHGs across several blocks. In Annur block, ₹49.35 crore was allocated to 671 self-help groups. In Kinathukadavu block, ₹33.27 crore was provided to 651 SHGs, while Anaimalai block received ₹30.85 crore for 722 SHGs. Periyanaickenpalayam block saw a significant ₹2,885 crore loan disbursement to 355 SHGs. Karamadai block received ₹57.22 crore for 1,272 SHGs, and S.S. Kulam block was given ₹25.65 crore for 344 SHGs.
In Pollachi South block, ₹3,138 crore was disbursed to 599 SHGs, while Pollachi North block received ₹45.71 crore for 631 SHGs Thondamuthur block saw ₹19.34 crore being provided to 332 SHGs, and Sulur block was given ₹28.44 crore for 475 groups. Sulthanpettai block received ₹28.81 crore for 497 groups, and ₹19.78 crore was given to 385 SHGs in Madukkarai block.
In 2021-22, 13,171 women’s SHGs received ₹769.53 crore in loans, followed by ₹856.53 crore to 13,181 groups in 2022-23, and ₹923 crore to 15,324 groups in 2023-24. For 2024-25, the target for loan disbursements is ₹1,229 crore, with ₹956.81 crore already provided to 15,565 groups.
In addition, women from these groups are also involved in the ‘Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam’ scheme. There are 328 women’s health volunteers from 12 rural blocks and 176 volunteers from urban areas working on healthcare outreach in Coimbatore.
